The Faculty of Social and Behavioural Sciences (FMG) is the largest educational and research institution in the social sciences in the Netherlands. The Faculty serves 7,500 students in numerous Bachelor's and Master's programmes in Political Science, Sociology, Anthropology, Communication Science, Psychology, Social Geography, Planning and International Development Studies, and Educational Sciences. The academic staff is employed in education as well as research. There are over 1,100 employees at the Faculty, which resides in a number of buildings in the centre of Amsterdam.

The Amsterdam Institute for Social Science Research (AISSR) studies the functioning of contemporary societies and their interrelationships from historical, comparative and empirical perspectives. The AISSR aims to be an organisation that offers training to PhD researchers, as well as housing top-quality research that conforms to a clear, scientific mission with high-level research programmes. The AISSR is also a research institute within the Faculty of Social and Behavioural Sciences (FMG) and is the administrative unit for researchers of three departments: The Department of Human Geography, Planning and International Development Studies, The Department of Sociology and Anthropology and The Department of Political Science.

From 1 January 2010, the research group Transnational Configurations, Conflict and Governance (TCCG) has a vacancy for a:

PhD candidate in Politics (Research Group Transnational Configurations, Conflict and Governance)

This is an ‘open' advertisement, meaning that applications are invited on the basis of the candidates' own research proposals. Only proposals that fall within the themes of the group's research programme will be considered.

This research programme has two interlinked core concerns: conflict and institutional transformation. The programme is divided into two over-arching research areas, each of which in turn comprises two main themes.

Conflict, Civil Society and Democratization comprises the two themes:

  • Conflict, identities and negotiation
  • State-society relations, Authoritarianism and Democratization

Configurations of knowledge, power and governance comprises:

  • European External Relations, Capitalist Development and Democratic Conditionality
  • Risk, Knowledge and Governance

Proposals that bridge more than one of these themes are encouraged.

Tasks

  • Conducting research, publishing the results thereof in a dissertation and other publications
  • Teaching in the field of international relations or public policy and governance (10% of the time)
  • Participating in the AISSR PhD program, including following courses
  • Participating in conferences and seminars

Requirements

Completed Master's degree in Political Science or another related Social Science. Selection will be based on the quality of the research plan and CV.

Appointment

Gross monthly salary will be € 2042 in the first year and €2612 in the fourth year in case of a full-time position (38 hrs / week). Secondary working conditions at Dutch universities are attractive and include 8% holiday pay and 8.3% Christmas bonus.
